Located on Dniester river on Odessa Bay; was probably site of a Greek colony; Tatars established a fortress here in 14th cen.; part of Lithuania-Poland; passed to Turkey in 1764; was Russian from 1791; expanded in 19th cen.; severely damaged in WW II.
