City on the Tarsus river (Kydnos) in southern Turkey; capital of ancient Cilicia and one of the most important cities in Asia Minor; flourished under Roman rule; site of meeting of Marc Antony and Cleopatra in 41 BCE; birthplace of St. Paul; razed by Arabs ca. 660 CE.
