Facts in brief:

Renamed after Roman emperor Hadrian who reconstructed & enlarged city ca. 125; attacked by Avars 586; taken by Bulgars in the 10th century; twice besieged by Crusaders; taken by Ottomans in 1362; subsequently used as stronghold for Ottoman expansion into European continent; under Russian occupation in 1829 and 1878.
