Located on the canalized Bega river; originally a Roman settlement; sacked by Tartars in 13th cen.; a fortress was built in 14th cen.; under Ottoman control 1552-1716, when it passed to Austria; colonized by Swabian Germans; assigned to Romania in 1920.
