Facts in brief:
Located on Zwarte river, at intersection of northern and eastern Dutch canal systems. Was member of Hanseatic League and important medieval fortress until ramparts were destroyed during Anglo-Dutch Wars in 1674. Today is shipbuilding and manufacturing center.
