Facts in brief:

Stavoren was granted city rights in the 11th century, it is counted as one of the eleven cities in Friesland. Stavoren was once a wealthy port city, but began to decline in the late Middle Ages after a sandbank formed outside the harbour, blocking ships from entering and exiting.
