Known as oldest city in Netherlands; was imperial residence in Carolingian period; castle was destroyed by Vikings, rebuilt by Frederick Barbarossa in 1155 (later destroyed by French); joined Hanseatic League; joined Union of Utrecht against Spain 1579.
