Facts in brief:
Only Frisian port still connected to the open sea, it probably received a charter in 1234. While it maintained trade relations with Hamburg, Denmark, and the Baltic regions, it never became a member of the Hanseatic League. Whaling and related industries thrived here from 1634-1865.
