Facts in brief:
Established as a settlement in ca. 715 CE, and by 870 a residential tower was built. Important as a maritime center in the late Middle Ages, it was granted a charter in 1455. Emperor Sigismund made it a member of the Hanseatic League in 1422. Important center for cloth production.
