Located on Strait of Messina; founded by Greeks as sister city to Zancle; destroyed by Dionysius of Syracuse in 387 BC; allied with Rome 270 BC; taken by Alaric (AD 410), Totila, Saracens, Pisans, Guiscard & Aragon (1282); often ravaged by earthquakes.
