Located on Appian Way near the Lago di Fondi; was a Volsci town; had limited Roman citizenship by 338 BC; was papal property from 5th cen. BC; sacked by Lombards in AD 592 & Saracens in 846 & 1534; held successively by several families in Middle Ages.
