Located at confluence of Calore & Sabato rivers; founded by Samnites; later was important Roman town on Appian Way & base for their expansion in S Italy; destroyed by Totila the Ostrogoth in AD 452; ruled by Lombards, Byzantines (11th cen.) & then pope.
