Facts in brief:

Located at isolated N tip of island; designed by Hippodamus of Miletus & founded in 5th cen. BC; resisted attack by Macedonians, then citizens erected the huge bronze statue of Helios, known as the Colossus of Rhodes, later destroyed by earthquake.
