Facts in brief:

Was an important ancient port on the Ionian Sea; noted for great Mycenaean palace near here dating to 13th cen. BC, possibly home of King Nestor in Homer's Iliad; was scene of Athenian naval victory over Sparta in 425 BC; now is a fishing town.
