Facts in brief:

Island: Settled by Corinthians; noted as site of first naval battle of Greek history ca. 664 BC; when it sought help of Athens against Corinth, this was one of causes of Peloponnesian War; taken by Rome in 229 BC; was Venetian 1386-1797, & British 1809-1864.

City: Corinthian colonists named the city for Gorgon, the mythological demon who was routed by the Corinthian Bellerophon; noted for its palace.
