Facts in brief:

Located on Wismarbucht, an inlet of the Baltic Sea; was flourishing medieval center & wealthy member of Hanseatic League, trading mainly in herring & beer; went to Sweden in 1648, to Denmark in 1649, to Mecklenburg-Schwerin after 1803; damaged in WW II.
