Located on both sides of Kieler fjord, inlet to Baltic Sea; adopted medieval Laws of Lübeck, for common defense for trade; joined Hanseatic League in 1284; ruled by Denmark (from 1773) & Prussia (1866); naval base from 1917; heavily damaged in WW II.
