Located on German frontier with Belgium & Netherlands; site of Roman baths from 1st cen. BC; probably was birthplace of Charlemagne, who adopted city as 2nd capital; destroyed in 881 & WW II, & noted as scene of signing of important treaties 17-19th cen.
