Religious and public Celtic center annexed to Rome, enriched by Emperor August. Magnificent monuments remains. Plundered by Vandals & Visigoths 5th cen.; occupied by Saracens until 737; Ruled by the Count of Toulouse in the 10th century, then by the French crown in 1229. Protestant stronghold during the religion wars retaken by King Louis XIII in 1629; scene of uprising 1815.
