  Facts in brief:

  Site was originally a Roman camp; modern town grew around an abbey founded in ca. 650 by St. Waudru; made capital of Hainaut in 804 by Charlemagne; became trading town with important cloth market in 14th cen.; often besieged in wars of 17th-18th cen.
