Originally founded as landing on Zwijn estuary; St. Eloi, bishop of Noyon-Tournai converted town to Christianity; 1st counts of Flanders built castle here (9th cen.) to guard against Norman invaders; was Hanseatic city; important trade center 14-16th cen.
