Located on the Danube river, at crossroads in center of Europe; major Celtic settlement, then Roman camp; passed to Avars, Franks (6th cen. AD), Magyars (907) & Babenbergs; was trade center during Crusades; went to Hapsburgs; was badly damaged in WW II.
